Why you might not want to visit Albania December 1, 2021 December 1, 2021 admin

By JOHN KARLENPORTPORTLAND, Associated PressWASHINGTON (AP) — There’s a new threat to the West’s longest-held fortress: The new president in the Balkans has taken office promising to ease restrictions on tourism.

And now a new Albanian newspaper is taking on that new administration, with its own warnings about what the new leader might do with Albania’s new prime minister.

Kelvin Eleni is a candidate for prime minister who has said he wants to help bring more Albanian tourists to the country, according to the daily Albania.com, which was founded by Eleni.

He’s a member of the Albanian Parliament.

In the past, Albanian government officials have criticized tourism in Albania as a threat to its cultural identity, but Eleni has promised to ease travel restrictions and open the country up to Albanian citizens.

In an interview with The Associated Press last week, Eleni said he would try to build a bridge between the West and the Albanians.

He said he’d be willing to help them with cultural issues.

But he added that his goal is not to change Albanian culture, but to help Westerners.

Eleni said Albania has a huge population of Albanians living in Europe and that the government is not taking them seriously.

He added that tourism is a big business and should be protected.

The government is taking steps to create jobs, he said.

The U.S. Embassy in Albania says it will not issue travel advisories or visa requirements, but it will continue to work with the country to improve security and civil liberties.

The embassy said it will also continue to assist the government in the fight against crime and terrorism.___AP writer Matthew Daly contributed to this report from London.
